Google has recently introduced significant updates to the Gemini API and Google AI Studio, aimed at enhancing the developer experience and providing more robust tools for AI development. Among these updates are the new Gemini 1.5 Flash and 1.5 Pro models, which promise to deliver faster and more cost-efficient performance for high-volume tasks.

Key Updates to Gemini API

Gemini 1.5 Flash and 1.5 Pro

The Gemini 1.5 Flash model has been designed specifically to meet developers’ demands for lower latency and reduced costs. This model, now available for testing in Google AI Studio, comes with several key features:

  • Higher Rate Limits: The rate limit for Gemini 1.5 Flash has been increased to 1,000 requests per minute (RPM), with no daily request limit.
  • Free Tuning Support: Starting June 17th, tuning support will be rolled out for Gemini 1.5 Flash. Developers can customize models to achieve desired performance thresholds without incurring additional costs for tuning jobs or using tuned models.

The Gemini 1.5 Pro model, while not seeing changes to its rate limits at this time, continues to offer robust capabilities for developers needing higher performance.

JSON Schema Mode

Another major update is the introduction of JSON schema mode in the Gemini API and Google AI Studio. This feature allows developers to specify the desired JSON schema, enabling the model to conform to specific output constraints. This enhancement unlocks many new use cases where structured output is crucial.

Mobile Support and Light Mode

To cater to developers’ needs on the go, Google has implemented mobile support and light mode in Google AI Studio. These improvements provide greater flexibility and usability, allowing developers to quickly test multi-modal prompts from their mobile devices. Additionally, users can now select their preferred UI mode (light or dark) or use system defaults.

Building Towards a World-Class Developer Experience

These updates reflect Google’s commitment to creating a world-class developer experience. By increasing rate limits, offering free tuning support, and providing flexible UI options, Google aims to empower developers to build innovative solutions more efficiently and effectively.

Developers can access these new models and features free of charge in Google AI Studio. For those looking to scale with enterprise-grade features, the same models are also available via Vertex AI, Google’s enterprise-ready AI platform.
