This year’s puzzle is a perfect example of how artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance creativity and speed up developer workflows. It includes five unique games, each with its own style, and a hidden sixth game featuring a beloved dino character. To bring this experience to life, our team of developers and creatives collaborated using Google AI Studio and Gemini models.

How We Built It

To begin with, we started in Google AI Studio, where we brainstormed ideas and tested game mechanics. AI Studio made it easy to experiment and quickly build prototypes. As the games became more complex, we transitioned to Google Antigravity. This platform allowed us to refine our early concepts and turn them into polished, final games.

How AI Made It Better

AI played a significant role in shaping the Save the Date puzzle. Here’s how we used Gemini models to enhance the experience:

  • Level Design: First, Gemini helped us create dynamic and solvable levels. For instance, Nonogram’s first level is pre-designed, but later levels are generated dynamically. Similarly, Stretchy Cat uses AI to create random, solvable puzzles with Hamiltonian pathing logic. Meanwhile, Word Wheel includes 100 levels, all generated by Gemini.
  • Gameplay Features: In addition to level design, AI added fun and interactive elements. For example, in Hole in One, Gemini acts as a virtual caddy, offering tips and playful commentary. Likewise, Supersonic Bot uses your voice volume to guide the Android Bot, making gameplay more engaging and interactive.
  • Game Design Tools: Finally, the last game, Dino Pal, is a virtual pet with a personality that adapts to your play style. To make game design easier for non-technical team members, we used Gemini to create a special game designer mode. This tool allowed us to fine-tune difficulty settings and game length with ease.

Explore and Create

What makes this year’s puzzle even more exciting is the opportunity to get creative. All the games are available in Google AI Studio, where you can explore the code, tweak prompts, and remix the logic. As a result, you can build something entirely unique and share your creations with the world.

Join the Fun

In conclusion, the Save the Date puzzle is more than just a warm-up for Google I/O 2026. It’s a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and the power of AI. Whether you’re solving puzzles or remixing code, this experience sets the stage for the exciting announcements and insights to come.
